Almost everyone has a goal and dream in life,

Happiness

something that they wish could or would come true - whether it be losing weight, getting that dream job or finding Mr/Mrs right. Both the words ‘Goal’ and ‘Dream’ have two very different meanings yet are so closely linked that sometimes we get confused between the two. In this blog post, I want to show you why it’s so important to really understand the difference between the two so that we can use both meanings to our best advantage; how you can turn your dreams into a reality and also why it is so important to dream! – There’s a reason every Princess story has a Fairy Godmother – and that’s to make her dreams come true. Now it’s time for you to be your own Fairy Godmother and make your dreams come true too.

Let’s start off by going through both the words DREAM and GOAL:

A GOAL is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as:

‘The object of a person's ambition or effort; an aim or desired result.’

Now let’s look at DREAM.

The Oxford Dictionary describes this as:

‘A cherished aspiration, ambition, or ideal.’

Basically a goal is a desired aim that we aspire to achieve, where as a dream is almost an ideal of where you would like to be.

Throughout life, we are told that if we DREAM BIG we will eventually get there – the problem with dreaming is that there is no action to go along with that. There are no directions given to get you there, there isn’t a manual and you don’t give yourself a game plan to go with the dream. So that’s where they stay – within you, being cherished. However…as soon as you change that dream into being a goal, all of a sudden you have given yourself a target to aim towards – and trust me here, if your dream means that much to you, then it will be such a piece of cake to turn it into a goal and therefore create an action plan.

For example, let’s go with weight loss:

It’s very easy to dream that you would love to lose weight.

‘I wish I was thinner.’

or

‘One day I will be a size smaller.’

Here’s the problem with this DREAM – there is no definitive goal! No timeline, no set target, no steps of how to get you there. All it is, is an ideal. That’s the hard truth. And without all of those things, that dream will never become a reality.

So let’s take this same example and turn it into a goal!

‘In 4 weeks I want to have lost 8lbs’

Great! That’s a goal – something you are going to work towards, it’s specific and theres a definitive target at the end of it. So how are you going to achieve this?

Once you have told yourself you ARE going to do something and that it’s a goal, then you will find it so much easier making those baby steps to achieving it.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m NOT saying that dreams are bad…in fact totally the opposite.

When you’re younger life is a dream – it’s the ideal life you work towards. Think back…did you want to be a ballerina? Or own a mansion?! Or want to live on a farm full of horses? These are all dreams you had of where you wanted your life to go. As you get older however goal setting starts to kick in… ‘I’m aiming for an A in my Physics A-Level so I can go to university’. All of a sudden a goal is created, this is no longer something you want in an ideal world, but something you are aiming to achieve in reality. Dreams start to become goals.

At that teenage age dreams are still on your side. You still have high hopes of where your life will go, who you will meet, where you will live. That wold of day-dreaming still has its doors wide open for you and that is wonderful as it opens your mind! You believe you can make your dreams come true and then you set goals to make that happen.

Right from a young age we know the difference between DREAMS and GOALS,and we work hard to turn our dreams INTO goals. We naturally know where our mind set should be at. However, as you get older the real world kicks in. Knock backs and rejection start to creep in to your life and that trust you had in yourself to get to your goals starts to lessen. Now dreams just stay exactly that, a dream, an ideal.

That fear of rejection starts take over and a belief system starts to kick in that dreams are UNOBTAINABLE goals.

For example, you dream of fitting into that size 10 pair of jeans again, or you dream of a change of career, or even of trying again to find that one true love. The more you tell yourself it’s JUST a dream, or that ONE DAY it will happen, the more you’re stopping yourself from turning them into goals and making them a reality. This is when it’s time to change that train of thought.

We need to start believing in ourselves again, letting go of that fear and communicating with ourselves in the right way to make ourselves believe that our dreams can become a reality through making goals.

Language is our most powerful tool as human beings, so start using the right language when communicating with yourself.

Rather than saying something is JUST a dream, start saying its your GOAL.

The more you say it’s a goal the more likely you are to make steps to achieve it.

Rather than saying ‘I wish I could get that job’, say to yourself ‘I’m going to get that job…. now how do I go about doing it?’.

It’s so easy to get caught up in the negativity, thinking that the things you want will never materialise. But just changing the way you communicate with yourself can change entirely how you feel about a situation.

Do this right now, write down five ‘dreams’ you have that you feel are unobtainable. Think for a moment, open your mind and next to each one ask yourself:

  • How can I turn it into a goal?
  • What steps will take me in that direction?
  • What 3 baby steps am I going to do today to get me started?

Start making your dreams into goals and set yourself a path to get there. Don’t let the idea of a DREAM hold you back. Start letting the GOAL push you forward. Dreams aren’t only for when you’re 6, they can come true even in adult life – all you have to do is start using the right terminology with yourself. Create goals that will make your dreams come true - In other words be your own Fairy Godmother!
