Turnyourdayaround

We all have those days when things just don’t seem to go to plan at all, or where things start to fall apart and everything just goes totally wrong! We have ALL been there at some point. Even the most positive of people still have days when they’re not so happy.

We are our harshest critics and self-criticism is the most detrimental type of criticism there is – it’s incredibly brutal, unfair and pressurising. So when things don’t go to plan and we have a rather rubbish day, these thoughts and judgements of self-criticism just make everything 100 times worse. It’s so easy to get caught up in the negativity and one rubbish thing that might have happened, soon can ruin the entire day!

So I wanted to share some of my tips and techniques of turning that bad day around. How to get yourself out of that funk and push yourself onwards and upwards. There’s no point in wallowing in self-pity – yes, it feels good for a moment – but once that moment has passed, you feel even worse than before. So next time your day is not going the way you planned, put your positive pants back on and work through these steps to help turn your day around:

Safe Space

Do you remember when you were little you probably had a ‘time out’? Those times you were upset and distressed, you were told to go to your room? Well even as adults, we need to give ourselves a ‘time out’ every now and again.

When something starts to overwhelm you, or you feel anxious, stressed and distressed – just take yourself out of that situation and head over to a safe space. Now, this safe space could be anywhere – it could be behind a closed door in your house, or a nice cosy bedroom, or even a park bench. Your safe space could be anywhere as long as you feel secure and comforted by being there. For me personally, I like heading into the bathroom and just closing the door behind me. It’s something I’ve always done when I’m feeling sad and overwhelmed – even as a little girl!

Just allow yourself some time in this space and allow yourself just to be in the moment.

Breathe

I love breath work – it’s something you can do both consciously and unconsciously at the same time!

  • It’s so grounding
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Noticeably reduces stress
  • Improves digestive system
  • Improves blood circulation
  • Gives you clarity
  • Allows your mind to be relieved from anxiety

Now you’re in your safe space, allow yourself to practise some breath work – here’s a very simple one from Andrew Weil called the 4784 breath:

  1. Breathe in for 4 seconds through your nose
  2. Hold for 7 seconds
  3. Then breathe out loudly through your mouth for 8 seconds
  4. Repeat this 4 times

Notice how you feel before AND how you feel after – more than likely you feel calmer,

Validate how you’re feeling

After allowing yourself time to just be and breathe, next it’s important to validate how you’re feeling.

Respect that what you’re feeling is important and significant to you – you can even write down why you’re feeling a certain way – this is when I find journaling particularly useful! Remember this:

You’re allowed to feel what you’re feeling.

They are your feelings to own, so work through them and respect them. Also ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I overthinking things?
  • Am I exaggerating what’s going on?
  • Am I over-reacting?
  • What is the honest situation right now?

Be totally honest with yourself as sometimes it’s so easy to get caught up in the negativity and with what’s gone wrong, that we can’t see the situation for what it really is.

Sometimes when validating your feelings, it’s also good to talk to someone about them. Talk it out, get a second or third opinion, hear a different side to the story – or most of the time all we want is a bit of comfort.

Gratitude

Next, it’s time to feel gratitude again. I love practising gratitude as I find it so grounding and it almost brings me back down to earth when I feel all over the place.

Explore everything that you are grateful for in that moment – trust me, no matter how rubbish and upset you are feeling, I’m sure you will find at least 1 thing you are grateful for in that moment.

Move

This is the most important one – MOVE!

Just get your body moving again – whether it’s dancing to your favourite song, doing star jumps on the spot, or a few roly polys up and down the corridor – just get your body up and moving. Even heading outside and going for a walk is so good for clearing the mind and that’s what’s so important to get you back on track for your day.

Sometimes you might even feel a bit sluggish and all you want to do is curl up under the duvet – but those are the times that moving will really do you the world of good.

So next time you’re having one of those ‘off’ days, try these steps to get you out of that funk and get you back out into the world with drive and enthusiasm.
