Women turn to food when they are not hungry because they are hungry for something they can’t name.

'Women Food And God' by Geneen Roth is the perfect book to read if you’ve ever suffered with a disordered relationship with food. If you have suffered with your relationship with food, from under-eating to binge-eating, then this book challenges you to confront your ‘why’ behind your actions to help you towards healing.

The core to her work is that everything is connected to the way you eat, including your beliefs about life and she asks you to question what it is you feel is missing from your life or what you need more of. This is something that not only resonates with me, but something that I use in my practice all the time and that I believe helps you on the road to true healing and freedom when it comes to the food you eat.

Why I love it:

  • It resonates with my core message that I share in my own practice
  • It talks about a topic that is extremely close to my heart
  • It’s not only full of wisdom and truth but also challenges you to take action and question why your life might be unfolding the way it is
  • It’s a perfect read for anyone who has ever had a negative relationship with food
  • Geneen doesn’t focus on weight but focuses on the effect food may have on our bodies
  • It teaches you how to fall in love with your body and your life so that you can fuel your body from a place of love – again, something I’m so passionate about teaching in my own practice
  • It goes through different practices to use in your own life to help towards healing
  • It emphasises balance over perfection

What it covers:

  • The relationship between spirituality and food
  • The relationship between our food choices and our beliefs about the life we live
  • Why it’s not about the weight
  • Why we should pay attention to our behaviours around food
  • Why listening to your body is key
  • The voice within you
  • Different eating habits and your connection to them

Why you should read it:

  • If you’ve ever suffered with an eating disorder or disordered relationship with food
  • If you’re still suffering with your relationship with food
  • If you’re looking for clarity on the decisions you make around food
  • If you’re looking to free yourself from negative thoughts around food
  • If you suffer with compulsive eating, binge-eating or restrictive eating
  • To learn how your beliefs about your life affect your food choices
  • To heal your relationship with food from a place of love
  • To free yourself from constant dieting
  • To free yourself from your limiting beliefs around weight and food

Compulsive eating is a way we distance ourselves from the way things are when they are not how we want them to be.

Staying where you are with what you are feeling or seeing or sensing is the first step in ending the obsession with food.

The shape of your body obeys the shape of your beliefs about love, value and possibility. To change your body, you must first understand that which is shaping it. Not fight it.

When you believe in yourself more than you believe in food, you will stop using food as if it were your only chance at not falling apart.

The desire to eat when you are not hungry reveals what you truly believe about life here on earth.
