Thoughts

So when was the last time I sat down and actually wrote a LONG piece for you guys – I can’t even remember! So much was happening towards the end of last year that I seemed to have got swept up in everything and neglected my one goal – to write on here AT LEAST once a week.

In any case – I’m back! And in full force. I have so much I want to share with you and have been writing down topic after topic over the last couple of weeks, which is amazing, but also incredibly daunting – I seriously have no idea where to actually start.

One of the first topics I wrote down was ‘thoughts’. Broad I know, there is so much to it and I want to tackle it from so many angles – this is one subject that I am so passionate about and feel I have so much to share. So that’s the reason behind this week’s podcast ‘The Power Of Thoughts’.

I realised something though – I completely forgot to mention this one important statement:

You are what you think.

This is a sentence that has really stuck with me over the last couple of months. The more I think about it, the more it resonates with me.

It’s a huge barrier that we totally ignore when we want to achieve something, start something new or find a new direction in life. What tends to happen is we hit an obstacle and treat the symptom (the obstacle) rather than the root cause (the thought). I mean doubts are thoughts right? Of course they are. I’ve spoken about doubts a lot. Have you heard the saying:

Doubts kill more dreams than failure ever will.

?

Well doubts are thoughts too.

If you doubt yourself – you doubt your abilities and what you’re capable of. You train your thoughts to believe that you’re not good enough and that you won’t succeed. You train yourself to automate to thoughts of doubt rather than success.

It doesn’t matter if we have 100 goals, 1 goal or even no goals. We are all on our own special journey that deserves all the care we can give to it. Journeys are full of growth, learning and understanding – like I said, you don’t need a goal to be on a journey – living is a journey. On every journey you’re going to come across obstacles that challenge you and barriers that you have to break though. As humans though, the easiest thing to do is to fall back into what feels safe for us. For most of us that means running past the challenge as fast as we can rather than facing it head on.

Most of the time the barrier we have to work through isn’t something physical – it’s our thoughts. Confronting our thoughts is scary – we have been thinking a certain way for such a long time that it feels safe and challenging what feels safe is a scary process – that’s why our thoughts (the obstacle) get neglected. They get bandaged up, forgotten about and the symptom is treated for the time being. Yes, it makes the immediate future easier to handle, but it doesn’t make it any easier next time we encounter that thought. It actually makes it 100 times harder.

So next time you find yourself doubting what you’re capable of, what you’re doing, or the path you’re on, check in with yourself. Be honest with yourself. Is this something physical I can take head on, or are my thoughts in need of some TLC?

Be kind to yourself. Why doubt yourself when you can cheer yourself on. At the end of the day, you and you alone should be your number one cheerleader! Think about your:

TONE:

Is your tone going to boost you up or bring you down?

LANGUAGE:

Are your words loving? Will they make you feel positive? Will they nourish your soul?

COMPASSION:

Are you compassionate towards yourself? Are your thoughts coming from a place of love, or a place of fear? Are you being kind? Being kind starts from being kind to yourself from within – you’re not truly a kind person if you’re being cruel to yourself.

Your thoughts are the driving force behind your life and you are what you think. So, remember to give your thoughts that TLC they deserve. Think about your TONE, LANGUAGE and COMPASSION.
